Tip ~ Storing Canning Jars

If you home can your food, here is a tiny tip that will save you some time and trouble.  When you open a jar to use the food, save the "cap" and wash it when you wash the jar.  Then, when both are dry, turn the cap upside-down and gently screw on a ring.  Place in your storage area.

When it is time to can, your jar will be perfectly clean, no dust inside, no dead spiders...  Voila!

    1. I gave all of the violet jelly to your mom to take home. Ask her about it! If it's gone, you and I can make some more next year!

  2. I am assuming you never re-use the old sealing lid?

    1. I don't, but I know someone that does. I just don't want to take a chance of wasting the food. If I were desperate, though....

  3. I recycle the used lids... They're great caps for storing dehydrated foods in Mason jars. No sense wasting a good lid when a used one will accomplish the same thing.

    1. Yes! I do the same thing, just not for actual canning.

  4. Dont can when you have your period it will often go off. There is a certain bacteria your body gives off at that time

  5. I use the old lids to store things in the jars, for example, I use them to store my special flours, beans, legumes and nuts and I don't waste my new seals

    1. I bet she was just sick over that. What a terrible thing to have happen.

  7. This is a great idea! Someone at Church said she never stores empty jars, she fills all of her "empty" jars with water - for extra water storage. Sounds like more work... but it's not a bad idea.

    1. That really is a good idea! But yes... more work.

  8. I reuse the lids to store things as well. I don't like throwing things away that can be recycled for some other use.

I bought a new box of Ball lids and when I opened them a couple days ago they were rusted. Now I can't remember where I bought them to return them. Very irritating! They will get used for your tip. Why hadn't I thought of this before? THanks for sharing.
