Frying Chicken for two and what is going on here today...

My daughter bought me one of these nice little 2-quart Lodge Logic cast iron Dutch Ovens.  I also have a very large Lodge deep skillet that I use for frying chicken. Today though, just for the two of us, I wanted to fry just two chicken drumsticks.  If I use a regular skillet, then lard will get all over the stove because a regular skillet is too shallow.  But it occurred to me to use the 2-quart Dutch Oven, and that worked very well!  I always use kettle-rendered lard to fry our chicken.


About 3 years ago, I started a simple quilt and then life intervened and I didn't get to finish it.  Finally, I've been working on it again.  I am doing hand quilting, sitting here at our kitchen island.  Hopefully, I will complete it before too long.


We had a break in the weather and I actually found a few oyster mushrooms outside today!

  1. I should remember my Lodge dutch oven for frying also. Your quilt reminded me, that one of my "retirement" goals is to start quilting.

  2. Is there another type of lard? Where do you find it? It is so expensive online! I have never used lard- I always learn from you!

    1. You can buy "lard" at a regular grocery store, but be careful because sometimes they partially hydrogenate it, and that is Very Bad for you. I buy mine at a "meat locker" where they do the butchering and actually render the lard there. I've done it myself before, too, and it's not hard.

    1. Yes, I do, and I make rather big stitches. My quilts are not fancy. I can't afford to have it quilted by a professional, so I have to do what I can. Thank you! Yolanda

  4. Hi Yolanda, Did you receive your first subscription to the quilting magazine yet? I just wanted to thank you for helping me with our puppy and his Lyme disease, also the garlic seeds.   5. I need to make some more lard! I have done it in the past, but haven't done it in a while. That fried chicken looks absolutely amazing! Frying meat in home rendered lard is the best :) Glad to have met you! :)

  6. My husband's family butchers pigs every December and they make lard. In my cupboard in the garage I have a wire handled pail that used to hold lard. My grandma always gave those pails to us when we were little to use for berry picking.

    We have a larger lodge Dutch oven that we use in the fire pit, but a smaller lighter one would be nice. I am not familiar with pre-seasoned. Are these still made in the U.S.? I had heard that some are being made in China. The Amazon site did not give country of origin.

    1. What a sweet memory. Thank you for sharing. :) Yes, Lodge Logic is made in the USA. I looked it up on their website. Pre-seasoned simply means that some sort of fat has been applied and adhered by heating. Then it won't get rusty. :)
