How to Make a Cattail Fluff Pillow

One of our daughters came to visit for a week. She and I really enjoy gardening and nature and herbal remedies and such. We decided to make a pillow from cattail fluff. If you go here , just in case you don't know what cattails are, you can read about them and see a picture of what I mean by the "fluff." We took some empty bags and walked along a railroad track near here and collected plenty of fluff.

Here she is getting ready to do it!

Here is a closer look at the fluff ~

It helps a lot to have a pug to assist in this job ~ (note the fluff on her face. :)

She used an old pillow case as the case for her project. Here she is separating the fluff and stuffing the pillowcase, which is placed inside a 5-gallon bucket ~

Now the pillowcase is full. She then just sewed a couple of seams across the open end, with larger stitches so they will be easy to take out and make a new one next year.

Here is the nice big pillow!

It would be best, when you use this pillow to put it inside TWO other pillow cases, as the fibers are fine and can sort of stick through the fabric. We learned how to do this from this book.

    1. Lynda, I couldn't do that. It would be a lot of work, and probably not worth paying for my time and the postage. I'm sorry. Do you not live near cattails?

  3. I can't believe I never thought of this! I've had plenty of cattail fights with my brothers and played with there fluff since I was little. I'm totally making some when the cattails grow!

  4. Roughly, how many cattails did you use for the one pillow case full? I was thinking it would take more than 50 to make a nice sized, super fluffy pillow!

  5. I read someone said 12 regular cattail sausages for a normal vest. Another post suggested 50 for a quilt, seems they fluff up lots!
I wanna know how well they wash & instructions.

    1. We never washed the pillow, but since the cattails live outside, I imagine you could.

  6. I have trouble finding the perfect pillow....is it worth making one of these? Do they remain super fluffy and comfortable?

    1. No, not really. It never was all that comfortable, but it was an interesting experiment. I always just get a really cheap pillow at Walmart that seems soft and then I squish it to where I want it under my head. Have you thought of buying a "My Pillow?" They are rather expensive, so I never would, but I've heard good things about them.
