I Don't Like Drying Dishes.

My mom worked as a maid for a while before she got married. SHE was a very good housekeeper. She insisted that as soon as dishes were washed, they must be dried and put away, and of course, that is probably best, because then everything is not only tidy, but dishes and equipment are then readily available, AND the dish drainer is empty so you can clean up as you go along. All that being said.... sigh.... I was (?) lazy and when they taught us in school that air drying dishes is more sanitary, I thought I would "win." Nope. Mom was not impressed.
I still had to dry dishes.

Now, I am almost 62 and in charge of my own kitchen and I still avoid drying dishes unless forced to do it. (Blush.)

I think this photo illustrates my stubbornness. :)

  1. I don't like to dry dishes either. I guess I got that from you. I stack my dishes in the drainer just like that. Grandma was right... It would be better just to dry them and put them away. It really doesn't even take that long... I still don't do it unless I have to though. ;-)

  2. I didn't know that your mom worked as a maid! That's really interesting. I have a dishwasher, but I end up hand washing every day anyway, usually the big pots and pans, and I too will do anything to keep from hand drying. I hate it!

  3. Yup, I'm with you. Growing up, dishes were never left on the counter. Maybe that's why we do not do it...a mental rebellion. I would rather they be put away, but just don't take the time. When I need more room, they get scooted away.

I will say, there are more important things in life than whether the dishes get put away...so we can just keep going on...stack of dishes and all.

  4. That picture looks like my dish rack. I have a dishwasher but never use it. Maybe I'm just lazy, but I prefer to air dry.

  5. I can take or leave drying 'em. I rarely do it. What I hate is that most dish drainers are the size of postage stamps. Then, one day, at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, I encountered one of these, the Cadillac of dish drainers. Spendy, but worth it. They are about half again as big as most standard dish drainers. And the silverware basket has *straight* sides, so there is more room.

    1. What I would really like to have is a stainless steel tray under the dish drainer. The plastic one always gets, well, less than pristine. I've looked and looked and no such thing seems to be available.

    2. I bet your hubby could fabricate one. All you would need is a sheet of stainless steel, or maybe something of enamel coated metal. The side of a cast off washing machine comes to mind. I bet one of the scrap yards around would have some pieces of scrap stainless, but guessing what grade if stainless it was would be a bit iffy, but since it wouldn't come into contact with food, it probably wouldn't matter.

    3. We've actually talked about that. Maybe someday!
