For the Birds

I made some lamb stock the other day, and after it had chilled, I took off the fat that had risen to the top. I froze the stock and saved the fat for the birds. Here is what I did:

Place the fat in a saucepan and add approximately an equal amount of peanut butter.

Melt and stir together. Turn off the heat.

Gradually add equal amounts of corn meal and quick rolled oats until it is nice and stiff.

Pack it into a container (I used a cereal bowl) that is lined with plastic wrap.

Chill thoroughly and slice it into pieces that will fit in your suet feeder.

They love it!

You may substitute any animal fat, and can add many other things to the basic mix... dried fruits and nuts and seeds. Just be sure your mixture is thick enough, but not so dry that it won't hold together.

  2. Oh, that sounds yummy. I bet they love it. I have melted suet, and put sunflower seeds in it, and they love that also. It is so nice to find different ways to feed our feathered friends, thank you!
